Hanamaru — Terms of Use

1. Your licence to use the app

We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to install and use Hanamaru on devices you own or control, for your own learning, in line with these terms and the rules of the store you downloaded it from.

You must not copy, sell or redistribute the app, remove its notices, or reverse engineer it except where the law allows this.

2. Price

This version of Hanamaru, including the hiragana and katakana course, is free. It contains no ads and no in-app purchases. If paid features are offered in the future, their price and terms will be shown clearly before you buy anything, and the free kana course will not be taken away from you retroactively.

3. Third-party content and licences

Hanamaru includes material created by others, used under their licences:

• KanjiVG stroke-order data, © Ulrich Apel and contributors, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0. That data stays under its own licence: you may reuse it on the terms of CC BY-SA 3.0, regardless of these terms.
• Noto Sans JP and Source Sans 3 fonts, licensed under the SIL Open Font License 1.1.
• Open-source software components, each under its own licence.

The full list with licence texts is in the app under Settings › Sources & Licenses. The hiragana and katakana scripts themselves are a writing system and belong to no one. Everything else in the app, including its design, text and code, belongs to nstudio.

4. Learning content and the JLPT

We work hard to make the content accurate, but we cannot guarantee that it is free of errors or that using Hanamaru will lead to any particular result, such as passing an exam. If you spot a mistake, please tell us.

Hanamaru is an independent app. Not affiliated with the Japan Foundation or Japan Educational Exchanges and Services. "JLPT" refers to the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test and is used only to describe the level of content.

5. Your data

Your progress is stored only on your device. If you delete the app, reset your progress or lose your device, we cannot restore it, because we never had a copy.

6. Updates and availability

We may update, change or stop offering the app or any part of it. Updates may add, change or remove features. We will not knowingly ship an update that removes learning progress stored on your device.

7. Liability

The app is provided free of charge and "as is". To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for indirect or consequential loss arising from its use. Nothing in these terms limits liability that cannot be limited by law, such as liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for intentional or grossly negligent conduct, or your statutory rights as a consumer.

8. App stores

If you downloaded Hanamaru from the App Store, Apple's Licensed Application End User License Agreement also applies, and Apple and its subsidiaries are third-party beneficiaries of these terms. Apple has no obligation to provide maintenance or support for the app; that is our responsibility. If you downloaded it from Google Play, the Google Play Terms of Service also apply. Where those terms and ours conflict on your use of the app, the store's terms prevail to the extent required.

9. Governing law and changes

These terms are governed by Hungarian law. If you are a consumer living in another country, you keep the protection of the mandatory laws of that country, and you may bring a claim in its courts.

We may update these terms. The current version is always on this page with its date. If a change matters to you, you can stop using the app; continuing to use it after a change means you accept the updated terms.
