Hanamaru — Privacy Policy
Last updated: 9 October 2026 · applies to app version 0.1.0 and later until updated
This policy explains what happens to your data when you use Hanamaru, an app for learning the Japanese hiragana and katakana scripts, on iOS (bundle identifier app.hanamaru.hanamaru) and Android (application id app.hanamaru.hanamaru).
1. The short version
Hanamaru does not collect any personal data. There is no account and no sign-in, no ads, no analytics, no crash reporting and no tracking. The app does not connect to our servers or to anyone else's: your progress and settings are stored on your device and nowhere else.
The app asks for no device permissions: no location, contacts, photos, camera or microphone.
2. Who we are
Hanamaru is developed and published by nstudio, established in Hungary ("nstudio", "we", "us"). For users in the European Economic Area and the United Kingdom, nstudio is the data controller for the limited personal data described in section 6 (when you email us).
3. What is stored on your device
To work, the app saves the following in its own private storage on your device. It is never uploaded to us and we cannot see it:
- Learning progress: which kana lessons you have finished, your review schedule for each character, the experience points you earned per day, your streak, the days you studied and your best result per lesson.
- Settings: your daily goal, sound and audio options, speech rate, haptics, romaji display, theme, motion preference and whether you have finished onboarding.
You can erase your progress at any time in Settings › Reset progress. Uninstalling the app deletes everything it stored.
If you use iCloud Backup or Android device backup, your operating system may include the app's storage in your own device backup, held by Apple or Google under your account and their privacy policies. We have no access to those backups.
4. Pronunciation audio
Hanamaru plays the sound of each character using the text-to-speech engine that is built into your device (on iOS, Apple's; on Android, the engine you have selected in your device settings, usually Google's). The app passes the Japanese text to that engine on your device. Hanamaru does not record your voice and does not send audio or text to us.
On some Android devices the Japanese voice must be downloaded once through the device's own settings. That download, and whether the engine ever uses the internet, is handled by the engine's provider under its own terms, not by Hanamaru.
5. Links that leave the app
The privacy policy, terms and contact links in the app open in your web browser or email app. Once you leave Hanamaru, the website or email provider you are using applies its own privacy practices. Our website nstudio.hu is covered by the nstudio privacy notice.
6. When you email us
If you write to [email protected], we receive your email address and whatever you put in the message. We use it only to answer you and handle your request. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in responding to people who contact us (Article 6(1)(f) GDPR). We keep the correspondence only as long as needed to deal with your request and any follow-up, and we do not use it for marketing.
7. Apple and Google
You download Hanamaru from the App Store or Google Play. Apple and Google process data about your download and device under their own privacy policies. They may give us aggregated statistics (for example, the number of installs per country) and, if you have chosen to share diagnostics with app developers in your device settings, anonymous crash reports. These do not identify you to us.
8. What we do not do
- We do not show ads and include no advertising SDK.
- We do not track you across apps or websites and do not use the advertising identifier.
- We do not use analytics, attribution or crash-reporting SDKs.
- We do not sell, rent or share personal data. We hold none from the app.
9. Children
Hanamaru is intended for learners aged 13 and over. Because the app collects no personal data from anyone, it collects none from children either. It has no chat, no user-generated content and no social features.
10. Your rights
Because your learning data stays on your device, there is normally nothing for us to access, export or erase: you control it directly with Reset progress or by uninstalling the app. For emails you have sent us, you have the rights of access, rectification, erasure, restriction, objection and portability under the GDPR; write to us to use them.
You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. In Hungary this is the Nemzeti Adatvédelmi és Információszabadság Hatóság (NAIH), 1055 Budapest, Falk Miksa utca 9-11., [email protected], www.naih.hu. If you live in another EEA country you may complain to your local authority; in the United Kingdom, to the Information Commissioner's Office.
11. Changes to this policy
Future versions of Hanamaru may add features that need data, such as an optional account or progress sync. If that happens, this page will be updated before that version is released, the date above will change, and the store privacy labels will be updated at the same time. Anything new will be described here first.
12. Contact
For any privacy question, write to [email protected].
